What is Laser Vision Correction?
An excimer laser emitting "cool" high frequency pulses reshapes the clear covering of the eye (cornea). The laser is extremely precise and reshapes the cornea to allow vision to be corrected without glasses or contact lenses.
Are all prescriptions correctable with Laser Vision Correction?
The laser is effective for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and combinations of these refractive conditions. Everyone's expectations and needs are different. The best way to determine if laser vision correction is the right choice is through consultation with your doctor about your prescription.
What is Lasik?
Lasik is a procedure that applies laser under the corneal surface. A thin layer of cornea tissue is lifted to allow access to the underlying tissue. This thin layer is gently replaced after the laser has reshaped the cornea.
Is it painful?
No. Before the procedure an anesthetic eyedrop is used to numb the eye. You are awake during the procedure and feel no discomfort. After the procedure your eyes may feel dry for a few hours.
How long does the procedure take?
The actual procedure takes less than 5 minutes per eye.
Can both eyes be done at the same visit?
Yes. We encourage patients to have both eyes done at the same time
What if I blink during the procedure?
The eyelids will be unable to close during the procedure because special lid openers are used. You will not feel these because the eyes and lids have been numbed with drops.
When can I return to work?
You may return to work the next day. We often schedule the procedure on Fridays to allow your eyes to rest over the weekend.
When will I see clearly?
You should notice an immediate improvement in your vision following the procedure. Your vision will continue to improve over the next few days and weeks.
Are the effects of Lasik permanent?
All indications are that the results are maintained over time. Any changes in vision typically occur within 6 months. If needed, the procedure can be done again at no charge for 2 years following the initial treatment date.
Does insurance cover Laser Vision Correction?
Most insurance plans do not cover this procedure. If unsure about coverage, a telephone call to your insurance company or your benefits specialist at work may help. Also, feel free to consult our office in this regard.
